To the Parents and Community of Kapiti School

These are the findings of the Education Review Office’s latest report on Kapiti School.

Kapiti School is located in Paraparaumu and caters for students in Years 1 to 8. Experienced, long-serving board members provide continuity of school governance. Teachers present curriculum information to the board and the principal keeps trustees informed about finance and property matters. Property developments since ERO’s 2007 review include two new classrooms, the relocation of the library and the school being re-roofed.

Students state they enjoy school and appreciate the leadership opportunities it offers. They know class expectations and are polite and respectful. Systems to provide a safe school culture are well established. Classrooms include a wide range of resources with comprehensive provision of information and communication technologies (ICT). Student work is celebrated and displayed with care.

Teachers have worked collaboratively to document and implement the school curriculum. They use student achievement information for forming instructional groups and setting individual learning goals. Teachers are at different stages of implementing assessment for learning. They share ideas and work collegially. The principal is developing leadership and devolving responsibilities amongst the teaching team.

The special needs coordinator oversees the identification and provision of programmes and initiatives across the school for those students requiring additional support. Syndicate-wide enrichment classes are provided for gifted and talented students. Reporting of well-analysed schoolwide achievement information for all year levels, based on the results of nationally-normed tests, should allow the board to gain a clearer picture of overall student achievement.

Teachers plan further curriculum development and ERO’s evaluation findings support their future direction. The board and staff are in the early stages of developing a shared understanding of the process of evidence-based self review to guide continuous improvement of all aspects of school operations.

Future Action

ERO is likely to carry out the next review in three years.
